Oil is washing up all over the coastline of Brazil and the cause of this is unknown. The oil was first detected in early September. The people that live near the beach have been cleaning the oil and have removed over 1,000 tons of it. Oil has unique characteristics that show where it is from. Experts tested the oil and say it is very likely from Venezuela. The government of Venezuela says it is not from them. A director from the University of Geoscience institute compared oil from a Brazil beach and oil from the Venezuelan oil bank. The two are strongly similar. Tests are being done by the U.S., Norway, and France. Experts compared tanker routes to find out what happened. It is still unknown but is being investigated.
