We Need to Stop Objectifying Women and Girls

Society has spent many years viewing women as objects and prizes to be won, rather than complex human beings with feelings and passions. Robin Tran, a writer for EF magazine said it best, “When we’re taught that an entire gender exists purely to satisfy others’ needs, it dehumanizes millions of people, and it’s very difficult to have empathy for someone that you don’t view as a real person” which can be the result of multiple societal and cultural factors. In today’s day and age, social media plays a huge role in teaching boys that women should be “vied for” as well as strict gender roles we are taught as children. The idea that boys are meant to ask girls to school dances and if not, boys are deemed as not “man enough.” We as a society need to better about educating people at an early age about the way toxic masculinity and stereotypical gender roles can negatively impact both girls and boys. Women can be mechanics and men can be flight attendants. We need to be encouraging children to pursue their dreams, not discouraging them by creating limits due to toxic societal norms. It shouldn’t need to be repeated, but women do not exist for other people’s enjoyment and any different perception needs to be shifted.
