A teaser for a new Ghostbusters film, set in the universe of the original two films and co-written/directed by the son of the director of those first two films, was released in January of this year. It didn’t show much – the famous Ecto 1 was shown, abandoned in a barn somewhere – but that’s to be expected of teasers. Now it’s December, and the first trailer for the film now known as Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been released.
The film stars Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, the It duology), and Mckenna Grace (Designated Survivor, Fuller House), who star as Trevor and Phoebe, a brother and sister who move into a small town with their mother, as they’ve been evicted from their house and must move into an old house they’ve inherited from their grandfather. Soon after, the town starts getting rocked by earthquakes that definitely don’t have any origin in plate tectonics. With the help of a few old tools Phoebe discovers in the basement and a shonky old white hearse, can they, a teacher (Paul Rudd), and a few of their friends take on their grandfather’s legacy and truly bust some ghosts?
Whatever the answer is, the film is sure to make fans of the movies feel good. From the Ecto-1 now having a gunner seat to a highlighted collection of various spores, molds and fungus, various Easter eggs to various incarnations of the franchise are hidden in the trailer for fans to find. The only issue that they may have is that humor isn’t really highlighted in this aside from one rather snarky line from Wolfhard’s character – but as the film comes closer to release, you can be sure that there will be trailers and TV spots which reveal more of the movie’s cards, so don’t be too afraid about the tone of this film. Just remember who you’re gonna call when this film releases in summer 2020.
