When You Turn 18

BY ELAINA WEST

Turning 18 is considered a milestone birthday. You become a ”legal adult,” responsible for your own actions. Some things you are now able to do at 18 are: Vote, buy a lottery ticket, sign a contract, buy a pet, change your name, open a bank account, get married, sign yourself out of high school, buy real estate, work full time during school, buy a car, consent to your own medical care, move out of your parent’s home. Although you have more freedom, you also have more responsibilities. You can go to jail (not juvy) for committing crimes, and you become responsible for your own payments and taxes. Most 18-year-olds are still too immature to be considered a real adult.
