On a night in October 2018, Jorge Morales and Jose Bosch, from Guatemala, were out at night drunk and looking for pizza when they stumbled upon a box. Jorge decided to kick the box not knowing that Joseph Matos called that box his home. Joseph stated that he thought he was being attacked so he decided to defend his home by stabbing one of the men and slashing the other. Matos’ lawyer states that under the castle doctrine, “a person has a right to protect his home with deadly force if he reasonably believes another person is entering without permission and is seeking to commit a crime”. Although a hard decision that the court has to make is deciding whether or not a cardboard house held together by string qualifies for a house. In addition, some video footage shows that Jorge Morales only kicked the box once and tried to walk away, which is the opposite of what Joseph Matos has claimed.
