On February 3, an Oklahoma cross-country team was practicing for a meet that was coming up. They were running around their school when a man struck the runners with his vehicle. The six runners are Rachel Freeman (senior), Yuridia Martinez (sophomore), Kolby Crum (senior), Joseph White (senior), Shiloh Hutcherson (junior), and Ashton Baza (sophomore). Rachel Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene and the remaining five were in critical condition. Yuridia Martinez was pronounced dead on February 4 at the hospital and the others still remained in critical condition. The driver was Maz Townsend and after he hit the students, he drove for three more blocks where he hit another car, totaling his own. The accident came one day after Townsend’s own son, Cody Townsend, was killed in a car crash. Cody Townsend’s death is under investigation.
