Strict Dress Code

The Visalia Unified School District has a very strict dress code rule. People cannot wear spaghetti straps, nor can they show their stomach when they lift their arms even if the shirt isn’t a crop top. There are many things in the school dress code that do not make any sense, especially the ones over this new form of school, ZOOM. There are teachers in the district who make students turn off their cameras and change their shirts in their own household. The shirts aren’t revealing but seem “too inappropriate” for class when it is a tank top that is full coverage and shows no distraction to the rest of the class. It is ridiculous how some staff members think it is inappropriate to wear cute shirts that show a students shoulders. Shoulders are part of a human body. Everybody has them and a shirt that shows shoulders does not distract anybody whatsoever. A student once quizzed other students at school and asked them if they find shoulders distracting. The students laughed and said no. Students should feel comfortable in their schools, especially their school ZOOM’s. If students want to wear an innocent tank top they should be able to. Some students wear tank tops under flannels or jackets, but throughout the day it becomes hotter, so they want to take off their overcoats, but their teachers won’t allow them to so they sweat for the remainder of the time. This does not help the students feel comfortable in their schools. This gives them a lot of discomfort. Students shouldn’t wear certain clothes for obvious reasons, but if a student decides to wear a tank top or a shirt that covers their stomach but when they raise their hands it shows the slightest amount of skin it shouldn’t be dress coded. It should be understandable. Nobody in school will walk around campus with their arms straight up in the air. They will walk around with their arms down on their sides and their stomach will stay covered. Visalia Unified School District should adjust the school dress code policy and make some little acceptions to make students more comfortable in their environment. This would help the happiness of students and the comfort on campus.
