4G on the Moon

NASA and Nokia are working on a plan to have 4G become a reality of the moon by 2022. Doing this is only a part of NASA’s Artemis program which has the goal of having the first woman and the next man on the moon. Many people are wondering why the moon would need 4G and if us on Earth are trying to transition over to 5G, why would we purposefully make the speed slower on the moon. Nokia has stated that they would be using 4G because it is better suited for the surface of the moon, but they would later upgrade it. Also, along with voice communication, the 4G internet would provide faster data transmissions, and rovers responding more quickly that are controlled back on Earth. However, it has been known that it won’t be the typical large cell towers that we are used to. Although we have yet to know what the design of the 4G towers will look like, Nokia stated that it will be, “ultra-compact, low-power, space-hardened, end-to-end LTE”.
