The Newport News Shipbuilding is laying off 314 people with an addition to demoting 119 managers as a workforce reduction. This has been the first reduction in 5 years. The president of the Newport News Shipbuilding has stated that this more evenly distributes management and reshapes production and support ratios.
Employees who have been laid off were notified ahead of time and the business is still hiring for specific, critical positions. The reduction was necessary for cost controls and to ensure the future for the shipyard.
