Illinois Lawmaker Blames GTA for Carjackings

Carjackings and crime are on the rise in Chicago and one lawmaker has an outlandish idea to the problem which is to ban the game Grand Theft Auto from being sold in the state. State representative Marcus Evans stated, “Grand Theft Auto and other violent video games are getting in the minds of our young people and perpetuating the normalcy of carjacking” and a community activist tells us that, “Representative Evans and I have researched and concluded that these very young offenders of carjacking are greatly influenced by the Grand Theft Auto video game”. It is unclear how this representative came to this conclusion but many studies have shown that there is no link between video games and violent behavior. In addition, many Chicagoans don’t believe that the video game, Grand Theft Auto, has anything to do with the crime but believe in different ideas like changing police tactics, educating drivers how to stay safe, tackling poverty which is correlated with crime, and getting rid of chop shops which are body shows that disassemble stolen cars and sell their parts. However, until some lawmakers look at the facts and statistics, more video games may be banned and the citizens of Illinois may have to buy them from neighboring states like Wisconsin.
