The Removal of Historic Names

By MAGGIE ANDERSON

In the city of San Francisco the school board has been discussing the name change of schools with the names of ‘Washington’ and ‘Lincoln’ or any other name that refers to someone who have a past in politics related to racism, oppression or slavery. After months of discussion, listening to the community, and hearing all sides of the story, San Francisco held a vote that was to rename schools with a name that had a bad reputation. Members of the community had said that the names of old slaver owners, politicians who were racist that named schools in SF, and politicians who didn’t oppose slavery has absolutely no significance to the community. If anything it adds hurt and painful reminders of what some families have gone through.
