College has the Wrong Thinking

Writer Heidi Stevens, in her opinion piece (2019), argues that there is too much pressure on the college students go to. She supports this claim by first explaining the college process, then implying how there is too much attention on the type of college, and finally pointing out everything done wrong giving a chance to change the way others view the college process. Stevens’ purpose is to show the readers how we need to rethink the college process in order to get the point across. That the name of a college does not matter, it is what defines a person in the end. She adopts an addressing tone for the grown ups, and a  tone for students.

Ms Stevens begins her piece explaining the college process by directly speaking how college doesn’t define you, it is what you make of it. “It feels harder and harder to frame college as the beginning of something, not the end result”.

As she continues Stevens then demonstrates how everything is based on the type of college you go to, “the buildings don’t have to be covered in ivy”. Heidi is stating that you can still find happiness, success and lifelong friendships regardless of what college it is, it’s about what you bring and make of it.

Heidi closes her opinion piece by mentioning everything the parents were doing wrong, pointing out the flaws. “ I don’t begrudge any parents who cheer those students on, sweating and working and believing them. That’s a beautiful model. It’s not the only model”. She’s saying that when kids don’t always get accepted into their dream college they might feel like they’ve let their families down, but it doesn’t depend on their human value or potential and that’s something Stevens is trying to get the grown ups to understand.
