Why Do We Watch School Fights? (ironic piece)

You finally look up from your phone and see swarms of people running towards something, something that must be amusing, don’t you want to go check it out? Your feet lift you up and start running with everyone as if you were all a part of a herd. You slam into someone’s back and realize that you have finally reached your long-awaited destination. You move to the side and see your fellow peers’ fists pummeling into each other, you look around to gauge everyone’s reaction and they are smiling. Some are cheering for their friend while others are recording and for no particular reason, you start smiling as well. You are finally a part of something, something entertaining, something alluring.

Our school day, and let’s be honest, consists of us just waiting to go home. Boredom consumes you from the inside out and all you can do is wait for it to be over. This repetitive day is expected until you hear someone yell, “FIGHT!”, during lunch, now the day is interesting. Suddenly the numb feelings are replaced with an adrenaline rush as you sprint to hopefully catch a glance of someone getting completely pummeled. Our dull lives no longer consume us and are instead replaced with the pleasure of violence, which we have been looking for for so long and have finally found.

So the next time that we see swarms of people running towards a direction, we join them. We are now a unity of people who have something to revel in, violence albeit, but at least we’re enjoying ourselves, right?
