Understanding Anxiety at School

You know that feeling of when you forget you had a big test and you are completely unprepared and anxious you’re going to get a bad grade, or the feeling of when you have to talk in front of a large crowd of people. Nerves, tension, feeling weak, tired, hyperventilating, stomach trembling, guilt. Anxiety. Something that so many people struggle with on a daily basis. There are many different kinds of anxiety, which makes it hard to detect it. Lots of people mistake anxiety with behavioral problems, which can lead to them getting in trouble for things they can’t necessarily control. As a student, I get lots of anxiety during school. Whether it’s making sure I’m turning in homework on time, studying, balancing sports and school, and balancing school with home life. As someone with lots of anxiety it is extremely important to me that teachers pay attention to the details of things. If a student is acting out they shouldn’t automatically think that kid is just being disrespectful, they need to take into consideration that, that kid could be struggling with other things causing this breakdown. Too many times kids are getting in trouble for things they can’t necessarily control, causing parents to complain. As someone who struggles everyday with stress and anxiety it is severely difficult for me to focus and complete simple tasks. At times I just wish teachers could take that extra step to reach out to those students they see struggling. Sometimes, just acknowledging the work they complete could do so much. An excessive amount of time teachers take so much time rewarding the students that do succeed and not giving those who are struggling the help they need to succeed like the others. Anxiety makes school hard for kids. Be aware and reach out.
