On Monday October 18, 2021 a statewide school walkout to protest the new requirements of the COVID-19 vaccine occurred in California. Governor Newsom announced the COVID-19 vaccine will be required for in-person school attendance- just like vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella, and more. We are the first state requiring schools to get the vaccination. Many California citizens did not agree with this requirement because they don’t want their kids having the vaccine in their bodies. People crowded by the California Capitol in Sacramento claiming how they don’t want their kids being “science experiments”. Teachers in Visalia were required to get the vaccine or participate in weekly testing every week. On Monday nearly 5,000 Visalia Unified students and 150 teachers were out for the state wide walkout. Newsom states that this issue will be mandatory on July 1, 2022 for grades 7-12.
