The Sixth Sense

I recently watched “The Sixth Sense” (1999) in one of my classes, and thought it would be a good idea to review the film. The following paragraphs will contain major spoilers, for those who haven’t seen the film yet.

The Sixth Sense, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, was almost a serial killer movie inspired by the film “The Silence of the Lambs”. The film stars Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment, and it’s set in Philadelphia in the 1990’s. This film has won many awards, such as Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer, People’s Choice Award for Favorite Movie, and the Nebula Award for Best Script.

The film is about a child psychologist, Dr. Malcom Crowe (Bruce Willis) that helps out his patient, Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), in his interesting case of “visions”. Because Crowe’s former patient curses him and kills himself because he didn’t get the help he truly needed, he’s a little on edge when helping Cole out. Crowe comes to a realization that Cole seems exactly like his former patient, and gets extremely nervous. Once Cole trusts Crowe, he tells him his secret; he sees ghosts. Crowe tries to help him out, but he knows he can’t stop his visions that he’d kept a secret for his whole life. When Cole’s visions start getting more frequent, Crowe tells him facing the ghosts is the only way it can help him. Cole faces the ghosts, and eventually, he ends up helping the ghosts and their loved ones. Unknowingly, Cole also helps Crowe with his declining relationship with his wife. Crowe comes home to his wife sleeping, where he realizes that he himself is dead. He remembers when his former patient cursed him, and he realizes that he got shot by him and ended up dying.

In my opinion, this is one of the best films that I’ve seen in a long time. I was expecting a big twist, but I didn’t think Crowe would be dead the whole time. For a 1999 film, the audience at the time was definitely not expecting anything like that to happen. Cole’s actor, Haley Joel Osment, is an amazing actor, despite being a kid at the time. Overall, I give this film 4.5 out of 5 stars, and hopefully, many people get to witness this great film.
