Cheetah Cubs In Smithsonian’s National Zoo

Four cheetah cubs lay curled up next to each other in a blue plastic tub. A fifth cub sits up on top of one of its siblings, with its mouth open. The other cubs are all looking toward this fifth cub. There is hay coating the bottom of the tub.

Three and a half weeks ago, Rosalie gave birth to five healthy cubs.

Five cheetah cubs sit and lay huddled in a corner of a white enclosed den. The floor of the den is covered in hay.

On November sixth, Rosalie moved her cubs out of the webcam dens and into the tall grasses. She was creating her own den for the cubs. The keepers allowed the mother to do that because she felt more comfortable having her den somewhere else. They will not move the cameras due to them not wanting to disrupt the cubs and the mom. The keepers will come in every day and check up on them in the tall grass yard. On that Saturday, the keepers came over and put extra bedding and warmth for her, and the cubs. They also added another closure in case she felt comfortable using the den. She denied that and stayed out in her own handmade den. The next following days she moved her litter into the third den. They believed that she did this because she was exploring the den and it’s very unusual for the cubs to not be with their mother. The next morning they saw the hay was very matted down and their suspicions were correct.

So far Rosali is doing an amazing job with her cubs and moving her cubs is very normal for animals to do.
