Decades of economic expansion and poaching had caused the population of tigers in China to decrease greatly. Though, over the past 2 decades, the number of tigers in Northeastern China has increased by about 55. It may not seem all that much to some, but according to recent studies by Chinese scientists, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Wildlife Conservation Society, this is a dramatic recovery.

In 1998, tigers were said to be essentially lost in China, but because of the change in population, Mr. Miquelle had said that the changing attitudes in Beijing towards conservation have sparked many measures. With this, Miquelle had been made hopeful that the increase in the tiger population will prove durable.
