Relationships in High School

Although having a relationship in high school can be exciting due to the thrill of it and getting the full experience of being a teenager, high school relationships are not ideal and this is because they can distract you in school, and they cause a loss of happiness.

High school relationships are not always the fantasy that we hope for, sometimes being in a relationship as a teenager can cause a student to fall behind in their school work. Having someone in your life that is that important can cause one to lose focus and slowly start to want to revolve everything around them as time goes on. For instance, in the past being in a relationship made it very time-consuming and took away some of my time when we constantly wanted to be together. When I would get home after school the only motivation I had was to hang out with my boyfriend, thinking about how I only wanted to be with him. So, by the time I get home, I barely have any time or desire to fit homework into my schedule and as a result, this causes my grades to drop when I don’t do my homework at home. There are many teens that get so caught up in their relationships and in the end, decide to put a boy first before their school work. Being a teenager your main focus should always be school and bettering your future over anything. There are many teens today that are wrapped up in their relationships. They spend too much time out with their significant other when they have other responsibilities. Some might say they are able to have a balance between having fun and their school work, although even with this, you could lose that mindset from revolving everything around them and will have a harder time focusing when your mind is somewhere else.

Being involved in a high school relationship can be such a burden on someone’s mental health and can cause a decrease in their happiness. The majority of high school relationships tend to not last and so when they do end, it is so detrimental to a teenager because the person you spent all of your time with is now gone and can leave you feeling empty. For example, a large portion of high school students have gone through heartbreak and for me, personally, it was hard to pick myself up and get back on my feet after I had become very dependent on them. When you’re a teenager you’re still growing and developing, this is a process that should naturally be done on your own because when another person gets intermixed and when it inevitably ends in heartbreak, it can destroy a person’s happiness. This is seen in a lot of teens and causes a loss of appetite and no motivation to get through the day. It should be noted that a failed relationship can give you a chance to learn what you would like in a future partner, but it is dismissed that being so vulnerable with someone at such a young age can lead to other issues in their mental health and personal development.

While being in a relationship with someone at a young age can seem fun at first, this is not always the case. There can be a loss of happiness and can cause you to fail school. Focusing more on who you are as a person in high school, you learn more about yourself without having to feel the pressure that a relationship brings. This can benefit you because it gives a chance for you to experience more about what you like in a person and what you want in a relationship.
