Free Birds: The Thanksgiving Movie You Never Knew About

Thanksgiving’s just around the corner, with Halloween already over and Christmas movies being added to every streaming service. While there’s not a whole lot of movies centered around the holiday of Thanksgiving, there is one VERY INTERESTING movie that I’ve watched every year with my brother, and it’s one that not everyone knows about.

Free Birds is a movie created in 2013 by Reel FX Animation Studios (the same studio that made The Book of Life and Open Season 2). The premise of this film is laughably ridiculous — two turkeys going on this adventure back in time to the first Thanksgiving, and getting turkeys off the menu. It’s so bad that it’s honestly the best part about watching this movie. It’s ridiculous in a way that makes it great to watch.

I remember coming across Free Birds while scrolling through random movies out of boredom, and out of curiosity my brother and I decided to check it out. We never expected Owen Wilson to voice the main character Reggie, and the entire plot of the movie threw us off completely. And yet each character is very endearing and the movie does a great job at making us care about what’s going on. There’s comedy, there’s laughter, there’s cinematic moments, and there’s even a war scene between the turkeys and the Pilgrims. It’s everything I never thought this movie was going to be and much more.

The ridiculousness is all part of Free Bird’s charm and is one of the reasons why watching this has become a tradition for my brother and me. Every viewing we find something different and we always laugh at the same jokes, because it’s just that kind of movie. Whether you like it or hate it, you cannot deny that there is some heart put into Free Birds that is different from other animated movies. So if you’re interested in checking out this interesting movie I would highly recommend it, especially if you’re watching it with friends/family. It makes the viewing experience much more enjoyable and fun.
