SUMMARY

This song is about death, loss, and love. The story “Killing Loneliness” tells us about long lost memories of an old relationship surfacing back, haunting them in the future despite thinking it was a dead and buried memory. Another interpretation of this song is the embodiment of addiction and our protagonist is “Killing Loneliness” with the drugs he takes.

ANALYSIS

On the surface, this song appears to be a catchy song with a few relatable lyrics but if you actually read the lyrics you can find multiple hidden meanings within the song. The original meaning of this song was confirmed by Ville Valo himself, this song is about a close friend of Valo’s named Brandon Novak who struggles deeply with heroin addiction (he was on heroin while Valo wrote this song). Novak called heroin his “companion” and blamed his addiction on his want to “Kill his loneliness”. When I first began to go over the lyrics in this song, I came up with my own personal interpretation of the song. “Memories sharp as daggers pierce into the flesh of today (describing his pain from the memories) The suicide of love took away all that matters and buried the remains in an unmarked grave” This shows how memories of old times and past relationships can come back to patronize us in the future even if those memories were dead and buried long ago. The last interpretation this song could represent is a sexual relationship gone stale and sour. The lyric “The Suicide of love” could be the two individuals involved did not love each other truly, in other words, to “kill the loneliness”. The loneliness shows to still be alive, solitude begs them both to stay but they are incompatible to be with each other.
