Fiona Apple

Almost every single season or month I obsess over something whether it be food or a song or an album or even a person. I honestly have no idea why I do this and I don’t even know if I would call it an obsession but more of finding comfort in something by doing it over and over. It is almost like a fixation. I am pretty sure this is normal because most people who I’ve asked have had the same experience. I don’t even really like calling it an obsession because then I sound crazy but I will admit that I am genuinely obsessed with Fiona Apple this winter. The first time I heard Fiona Apple was in March around my birthday, and the first song I heard from her was her cover of “Across The Universe” by The Beatles. Although this cover sounds nothing like the rest of her music I still enjoy the cover so much, I really like it and I personally think it’s better than the original but that is just my own opinion. I think “Across The Universe” is a good starting song, even though her own music is different I still think it’s a good way to realize how good her voice is. It’s also just a song that EVERYONE can enjoy and listen to. Then around June, my ex-girlfriend recommended more of her music to me. The second Fiona song I heard was “The Way Things Are” off of her “When The Pawn hits..” album, which has then become one of my favorite albums. I will be honest that at first I didn’t really like the song and had to force myself to listen to it to make my ex-girlfriend happy. It wasn’t really that I didn’t like it because sometimes when I hear certain songs I might not like them at first but I can tell that I eventually will like them and that they are subjectively good. So I kept listening to the song and eventually I actually really did like it. And then around November my really close friend brought up that she liked Fiona a lot and recommended a lot of songs. I decided that because I liked “The Way Things Are”, I should give the rest of the album a chance. And that was the beginning of a literal infatuation with the album “When The Pawn Hits…”, every week I began to like another song off the album so much. Right now it’s “Fast As You Can”, but I would say that my ultimate favorites from the album are “Limp”, “A mistake”, and “Get Gone”. The songs are extremely good and the lyrics are so insanely genius I genuinely don’t think I could get tired of this album. I understand that some people won’t like her music because I didn’t think I did at first either. I think her music is really different from a lot of the music I listen to, which is why it was kind of hard for me to get into her at first, but I think it’s really good to branch out to new types of music all the time. Some other songs I like from her are “Shadowboxer”, “Sleep to Dream”, and “The First Taste”. I really hope you decide to give her a chance.
