On May 6, 2016, once again Death Grips dropped their 7th album, Bottomless Pit. This album was followed up after their two-part album titled “The Powers That B” and Bottomless Pit is very similar to the second half of the Powers That B which is also titled “Jenny Death”. Death Grips are a three-man band that formed in Sacramento and has been making music since 2010. Death Grips are mainly known for their debut album “The Money Store” but in my opinion, Bottomless Pit is their most underrated non-instrumental album., it is very overlooked by the other albums that Death Grips have made.
Bottomless Pit was hyped up more than some of the other albums with a video and a leak of the album cover following the release of the actual album. Bottomless Pit is more of a rock type album, it involves a lot of raw but amazing sounds of the drumming and guitar provided by producers, Zach Hill and Andy Morin who are ⅔ members of Death Grips with Stefan Burnett (better known as MC Ride) being the third and also the main key to what Death Grips are. Bottomless Pit is a very good album with it focusing on more rock but also follows their electronic vibe from albums like The Money Store but also No Love Deep Web.
Some things I liked about this album are the vibe and sound from the album itself. The sound production on this album is really amazing. Just from the first few tracks of the album you can tell that their style has changed but also kept the old same style they used in different songs. There are a lot of hardcore songs on the album that gives you a really good rock/heavy metal type of vibe when it comes to listening to the album. Some of the outstanding tracks on Bottomless Pit are “Giving Bad People Good Ideas, Hot Head, Spikes, Warping, Eh, Bubbles Buried in this Jungle, Trash, Three Bedrooms In A Good Neighborhood, 80808”.
One thing I did not like about this album is the lack of quality of the songs I did not like. It feels like the songs had a lot more potential than what was shown in the album but overall most of the other tracks make up for the lack of quality. This album also took a while for me to get into because it was so unique and different from the other death grips albums where MC Rides vocals are very clear and shown like in Exmilitary but also gives the electronic/rock type vibe like No Love Deep Web and I really like how it kinda connects to the other albums taking a bit from each album and putting it into one, but some of the songs don’t have that feel, unfortunately.
Overall I would give Bottomless Pit a 9/10, It is a very good rock heavy metal album and I really like that it takes a turn than what death grips fans are used to which is 90% sounds and drums to a 50% Rock 50% electronic/sound which is honestly amazing. There are some very chill songs on the album too that just calm the listener down during the album which can be a very good rollercoaster of an album and emotions which stand out. There are unfortunately some songs that lack in quality, even the ones that I like some of them just do not compare to the other Death Grips albums. In Conclusion, Bottomless Pit is a very good album and maybe it might grow on me in the future.
