Pixar’s ‘Turning Red’ Caught Some Parents Off guard, But The Film Isn’t The Problem

Pixar’s latest film has some parents “Turning Red” upset or embarrassed that the animated coming of age film makes reference to periods. It is streaming on Disney + which is about the story of Mei Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese Canadian honors student with adorable dorky confidence. This all changes when Mei marks her womanhood by “poofing” into a giant, 8-foot red panda whenever she gets excited, angry, or overly emotional. Which is a metaphor for adolescence and puberty.

The moms are saying that they don’t like it because they think that it will scare the kids and they won’t know what’s going on in the movie. Young girls should know about periods at a young age because then they will know what to do once it happens to them and not be scared. The boys should know because then when they see that it happens to a girl they won’t laugh at them and will let them know. When the kids do ask the parents they should be open about the conversation but if the kid doesn’t open up to them it should be up to the parents to tell them.

Overall, in my opinion, it was a good movie and it teaches young kids about periods and knows what to expect.
