Visalia Unified School District planned Spring Fling for April 2nd, 2022 at Mt. Whitney High School, after the great success of Formal in January. Spring Fling is a dance that is traditionally held after Formal and before Prom, and high school students from any grade are able to attend. The attire for Spring Fling is usually more casual and the theme was going to be “Game On”, or sports-themed. Students planning to attend the dance were encouraged to wear sports uniforms and jerseys to go along with the sports theme. The event was advertised for a while in advance and tickets were pre-sold the week of March 28th at each of the high schools in Visalia. After only three days of selling tickets, some high schools reported low ticket sales and were worried about student attendance at the dance. A meeting was held mid-week, without representation from every school, and a decision was made. Spring Fling 2022 was officially canceled on Wednesday, March 30th. What was not taken into consideration was the fact that most tickets are usually bought at the end of the week, on the Thursday and Friday before the dance, which would have definitely increased the projected amount of students attending. Also equally upsetting is the fact that any freshmen or sophomores who want to go to another dance will have to wait until next year unless they are accompanied to prom by an upperclassman, which is not guaranteed.
