Rory Gilmore Sucks

BY JULIET PEREZ

Gilmore Girls is one of my favorite shows, however, that being said, I cannot stand Lorelai or Rory. Lorelai has never really been tolerable to me from the beginning, but I loved Rory when she was at Chilton in the first few seasons but after she graduates, her character kind of just goes downhill. Even nearing the end of her high school experience when Jess is introduced she starts to get on my nerves a lot, and most of that was predicated on how she treats Dean. It’s not just cheating, it’s the hypocrisy and selfishness when it comes to her own actions. When she’s with Dean she begins to develop feelings for Jess, whether she wants to deny it in the show or not, it’s very obvious to the audience that she is. Which is fine, people change. But instead of just telling him she leads him on and then gets angry at HIM for being jealous, even though he is literally valid and right about the whole thing. She also gets mad at Jess for having a girlfriend when she is literally dating Dean and has said she doesn’t like Jess. Then years later when Dean is happily married she coaxes him into cheating and justifies it because it’s “her Dean”. And then when Lorelai confronts her about it and tells her that it wasn’t right what she did, Rory gets so angry and then moves to Europe for a whole summer?

Past the whole Dean stuff, she just is so selfish. She was never there for Lane, her “best friend” and always expects Lane to be there for her. Rory’s dream is to become a writer, and she pursues this dream by writing a book about Lorelai’s life in detail, about her pain and trauma, and even when Lorelai expresses that she is uncomfortable about it, Rory writes it anyway. She just is so spoiled and acts like she’s had to deal with all of these hardships when her whole life has been handed to her, she acts like the whole world revolves around her.
