Between the Lines

A monthly book review By Josslyn Caskey

Staff Writer

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur is a poem book released in November 2014 and is described to be a mixture of fiction and nonfiction poems about her experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity. The book is split into four chapters focusing on ways Rupi dealt with pain and healing heartaches.

I received the book over a year ago as a gift, and I really enjoyed it. I think that Rupi Kaur is a fantastic author because of how she intergrades her personal struggles from her childhood into her work. Every poem is followed by a deep meaning or a powerful drawing that she drew. Each chapter reflects a different part of her life touching on sections of her life such as her childhood trauma, messy breakups, and her journey of self-love and healing.

When I started reading this book I didn’t really know what to expect. I had seen previous reviews of the book and most of the reviews were overall positive. So I gave it a read. Milk and Honey pulled my heartstrings, and brought me to tears at one point. It took over all my emotions, my feminist dreams, and my overall love for writing. It kicked started a newfound interest in poetry.

If you are looking for a book full of the raw realism side of life filled with heart and self-love, then I would highly recommend picking up a copy for yourself and taking yourself on a beautiful new journey.
