This past Thursday, September 22nd, our water polo teams faced Porterville high school at our home pool. As it was an important game for all of El Diamante’s water polo teams since it was the first league game, it meant a little more to the varsity girls. Last season, our varsity girls lost the valley title to Porterville in a four-point game, officially ending their season. So walking into this game, there was a lot of unfinished business the girls felt they had to take care of, as the outcome of this game meant a lot to both teams.
The first quarter was a long seven minutes, as neither team scored. Start of the second quarter, Porterville had the first point of the game after winning the sprint. Next to score was El Diamante. As the quarter went on, each team scored a goal one after another. It was 2-2, with only a couple minutes left in the second quarter. El Diamante was able to put up another 2 goals before halftime, allowing for a cushion going into the third quarter. In the last 47 seconds of the game, El Diamante was only up by one, each team having at least one more possession left. The girls had to make another goal to secure their lead, and they did. The game ended with a score of 8-6, the El Diamante girls taking the win. This was an amazing start to the league season for our girls’ varsity water polo team. Our water polo teams continue to take on the East Yosemite league Tuesday, September 26th as they face Redwood.
