Pros and Cons of the 3-Year Math Requirement

Visalia Unified says that starting in 2028, VUSD students will need to take three years of high school math for graduation instead of two years of math.

The advantage of this plan is that students could be able to increase their education level. A high level of mathematics education provides students with a wide range of career options. Most jobs require math skills, and the more promising the job, the higher the math relevance. When one learns math, one can learn how to logically solve problems. Since mathematics is a process of finding a solution to a given condition, it can help solve real problems by connecting the mathematical problem-solving process to everyday life.

However, the disadvantage is that the number of students who can graduate may decrease. Some students have a hard time with math. If they have to take a three-year math course, they may not be able to graduate because they don’t meet the graduation requirements. Also, math can prevent other students from getting the classes they want to learn.

Overall, this new plan will have some negative aspects, but I believe that a good education will broaden the knowledge and thinking of many students and provide students with a variety of career opportunities.
