This past weekend El Diamante hosted a water polo tournament on campus with many high schools attending. The first team our water polo boys faced was Edison high on Friday. This first game is where they took their first win of the tournament, starting off strong. Next up on their schedule was Redwood. This game was one to watch. The water polo teams at El Diamante and Redwood have always been unofficial rivals, both teams waiting for the game they face each other, to get an idea of league ranking. Last season, Redwood was the team El Diamante shared the boys’ water polo league championship with since they both beat each other once in the league. The outcome of this game was going to determine a lot for our team, and it was a nail-biter.

The first quarter was a little shaky for our boys, as it ended 3-1, with Redwood up. The rest of the half and going into the third quarter, Redwood held their slight lead, but we were creeping up on them. Beginning of the last quarter, the game was tied up. There were 6 minutes left for El Diamante to make their mark on Redwood’s team and all of their fans that gathered in the stands. It was a quarter that had everyone on the edge of their seats. In the last 4 minutes of the game, Redwood did not score once. The game ended with a score of 11-6, and El Diamante took the win. The winning did not end there for the boys’ water polo team, as they won their next two games. Beating both Clovis East and Kingsburg on Saturday and finishing first in the tournament. The results of this tournament spoke big volumes for El Diamante’s varsity boys polo and put them in the right direction as the start of the league approaches.
