The Princess Saves Herself in This One is the first poetry book in Amanda Lovelace’s “women are some kind of magic series”. Released in April of 2016, after sharing her poetry on Tumblr and Instagram she decided to start taking her poems and turning them into books.
To be honest, I had high hopes for this book. I’ve seen different reviews on Amanda’s books and they were mostly positive. So When I received a copy of The Princess Saves Herself in This One, I was excited to start reading it. But when I finished it I thought, that’s it! This book was far from what I expected, it had fallen short. I was expecting a poetic tale about uplifting women. However, it was mostly a collection of sad memories.
Now Amanda laid everything out in this book, she gets deep and personal talking about her life and her personal struggles. But when you title a book that implies it being uplifting it threw me off at first. The drastic difference in writing and overall meaning shifts from being raw and personal in the beginning to cliche “modernized’’ poetry. But on the other hand, I would read pages that spoke to me in a way. Things that I could actually relate to.
Even though I was disappointed in the beginning, the story really comes full circle in the end. So if you are a fan of feminism lead books. I would recommend this as a good starter.
Overall 3.5 out of 5 stars for me, not the worst but not the best either.
