Schlagenheim Album Review

On June 21, 2019, the band, black midi released their debut record titled “Schlagenheim” which is a Math-Rock and Jazz fusion record with vocals by singer Geordie Greep and produced by Cameron Picton, Matt Kelvin, and Morgan Simpson. This album was recorded in about five days but even knowing that this record is some of the most obscure music I have ever heard and that is like really starting off with Geordie Greeps vocals that just blend so perfectly with the instrumentals. Speaking of the instrumentals I would like to point out that Morgan Simpson is an amazing drummer alongside Matt and Cameron and it really does seem like all four members of the band have their role to play and without them, it would not be the same.

Schlagenheim is a very interesting concept for an album not only because of the experimental motive for this record but also because the cover art for it looks so incredible. This record starts out with a hard-hitting intro track titled “953” which slowly transitions itself into the second track which is “Speedway,” which is a totally different song than the first. This album sounds so incredible it can be described by how this record makes you feel. It is very unique, but also it can be very confusing to new listeners on what exactly black midi is trying to do with this project but that’s why I love it so much. My favorite tracks from this record are all of them, but if I had to choose the best I would say 953, Speedway, Western, and bmbmbm.

Overall I would give Schlagenheim by black midi a solid 10/10. This record has slowly become one of my favorites in the past few days the more I listened to it. It’s just most literally a work of art and I absolutely enjoy every second of this record.
