TikTok has become the number one website this past year (passing Google). The app has more than 1 billion users must mean that it could do no harm, well in this case the negative impacts outweigh its positive impacts. The former app Musically was bought from ByteDance company and later combined with another social media app named ‘Douyin’. Then released globally was TikTok. This app didn’t receive the attention that we know of until the pandemic. Becoming so popular has left users becoming addicted. Tiktok has an algorithm of videos posted to fit what everyone finds entertaining. The algorithm is what makes users stay addicted, the For You Page is where most of the time spent on the app is. Focusing on retention and time spent, to get you addicted they learn about your mental health status, sexual orientation, your taste, and other private sensitive information to keep you hooked.
