Recently, UC graduate students have been on strike for higher wages due to the unrealistic money the universities require. People on UC boards have said that students are “asking for too much money” but for graduate students, it is just a matter of trying to survive and get by. Nearly a week into the strike, there is little bargaining progress, but UC grad students have received immense support from others. More than 48,000 academic workers are begging for more realistic pay as well as better benefits. Going on strike has led classes to be canceled and halted research and most professors have canceled classes in solidarity with strikers and encourage students to protest alongside grad students. It comes down to the fact that they are not being paid enough to keep up with the expenses that come with school, housing, and everyday needs. Students have said that UCs are good academically, but when it comes to supporting their students they are nowhere to be found. Many undergraduate students have skipped classes to join in solidarity as well. As a result of the strike, many professors also started holding more office hours to support students.
