In the past two weeks, the state of California has received more rain than they usually do in an entire year. Many places in the Bay Area have been experiencing a lot of rain, flooding, and heavy storms. Places such as Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz are experiencing major floods and multiple piers have been destroyed. Some cities in Southern California have even been told that they need to evacuate to higher ground. These constant storms have already killed at least 15 people and just a few days ago a majority of Sacramento lost power due to the storms. These insane storms are mostly due to atmospheric rivers. Atmospheric rivers are narrow regions that carry water vapor and can cause storms. Atmospheric rivers are mainly caused by climate change. As climate change continues to warm the earth’s temperature more water from oceans and lakes begins to evaporate. This causes there to be more moisture in the air and makes these atmospheric rivers grow even larger. People need to realize that things are just going to continue to worsen if we don’t attempt to improve climate change. Right now we need to continue to prepare for the storms that will be coming soon.
