Many people forget why we have a three-day weekend in January and fail to remember Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to the civil rights movement that changed the lives of millions living in injustice. King rallied for nonviolent resistance to receive equal rights for black people in America. The most famous work he is known for is his “I Have a Dream” speech in which he speaks about his dream of living in a country void of segregation and racism. King was also the youngest person at the time to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The reality is, we are still to this day fighting for the same things King was advocating for (stop police brutality, etc.) What King stood for did not stop when he passed away, there is a legacy to be carried on. Black history in America is important to recognize key figures (King) of the past and present and to honor the contributions of African Americans who have helped shape this nation.
