Class of 2023 Cap and Gowns

The cap and gown colors for the class of 2023 have been changed. In the years before us, males wore green gowns and females wore white gowns. It was said that all of the class of 2023 will be wearing green gowns in order to show our “Miner spirit”. I have always been so excited to graduate in my white gown, and I am upset that our opinions were not asked before the colors were changed. We were not made aware of the fact that we were all going to be wearing green gowns until after many of us made our purchases, which I think is something we should have known beforehand. I do understand that this was probably done in order to promote inclusivity and acceptance on our campus. Not everyone identifies as male or female, and some students born of a certain sex do not feel they identify with it. This is something I absolutely respect and take into account, but I just wish our school went about this in a different way or at least asked our opinions on the subject. In my opinion, each student should be able to choose which color they would rather wear: green or white. The colors should no longer represent males or females but just be seen as what they are, a color and nothing more. This change is obviously not the end of the world, and inclusivity is much more important. I am just upset that the senior class was not part of a decision that would change something about the most important day of our high school career.
