February 14th was Valentine’s Day. On this day, people celebrate it by sending love messages to their partners, family, and friends. However, what is the origin of Valentine’s Day?
There are various theories about the origin of Valentine’s Day, but the most widely known is ‘Saint Valentine’s Day’.
The origins of Valentine’s Day go back to the Roman era, the 3rd century (269 AD). Roman Emperor Claudius II forbade soldiers to marry while on an expedition. The reason was that he thought that soldiers conscripted for an expedition would lose morale if they got married right before the expedition. There was a priest who disagreed with this, and he was Saint Valentine. He felt sorry for couples in love and secretly allowed and officiated their marriages. Because of his rebellion against the emperor, he was executed on February 14, 270. The day created to commemorate him is Valentine’s Day.
