“Book Club offers a safe space for fellow readers and students to come, relax, and talk about your latest read!” Book Club President, Olyvia Recendez-Metty enthusiastically exclaims.
Recendez-Metty is the Book Club president for the year 2023-2024. She is a senior and has been in the book club since its first year. For students, book club is an opportunity to socialize, make new friends, and create new memories.
“It’s a place to talk about books. We don’t do fundraising, we don’t do pizza sales… We come in and just talk about books.” says Recendez-Metty “Our club supervisor Mrs. Perez gives a closer insight on what Book Club truly is. Book Club is specifically for socializing and talking about current reads or discovering new books.”
According to Book Club Advisor, Mrs. Perez, “Reading is the most important thing we can do. Reading news, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, just reading widely. It just makes you a more empathetic person and [helps] you to understand more about the world and the people in it, outside of your experiences.” Mrs. Perez teaches AP Language at El Diamante High School.
The group’s goal is to promote reading and have a place where book lovers can share their enthusiasm for reading. They believe that reading helps people understand what others are going through while also learning about their lives. Not only that, but literature can show what happened in our world history and be extremely informational.
“It’s important to allow for growth and reading books is a great way to broaden your mind. Literature is a form of art and expression and to learn from the character’s actions or discover words and phrases you wouldn’t have known otherwise can only help you,” states Recendez-Metty
