Doja Cat vs. Olivia Rodrigo

By: Marley Crisp

Doja Cat aka (Amala Zandile Dlamini), was born in 1995 in Tarzana, California. Her label “Doja Cat” was inspired by a childhood nickname. She got this name for her notorious fascination with cats. She first blew up when she released the song “Mooo!” a novelty song in which she makes humorous claims about being a cow. After her name got out in the public eye she produced many different songs and albums that did well. Her newest release was the album Scarlet.

Doja Cat- For a while Doja Cat was ‘canceled’ which is what many teens use nowadays to say that they do not support them anymore due to something they did that many did not approve of. Due to this, she came out with an album that was attacking all of her haters. The album starts off with the song “Attention” which was her stating to her haters and fans how fast people switched up on her because of the way she looks now. The album has other songs that are almost antagonizing of her haters because in these songs she is almost mocking them for what they have been saying about her.

Here are some interviewers that I have put together about me asking individuals their thoughts on this album, and how it compares to the other artist we will be talking about in this article which is Olivia Rodrigo.

Opinions vary on how people feel about Doja Cat and her music.

Senior Nakiya Rivera says, “My personal opinion is that Doja Cat is a talented singer and I prefer her music over Olivia Rodrigo”.

While Senior Kiera Sanders feels differently, “I personally don’t listen to Doja Cat so I can’t speak on that, but I like the first song in Olivia Rodrigo’s new album; however I’m not a fan of the second song “bad idea right?” because it was too repetitive and slow, so I would choose Olivia over Doja”.

Olivia Rodrigo, grew up in Temecula California. She is an only child, and from a young age she started to sing and act. She is mainly known from the show “bizaardvark” which is part of the streaming network Disney. From there she built up her career and got cased in other shows, like “High school Musical: The Musical” in this she was known to sing and write songs a lot which is where her singing career got noticed the song,

“All I Want” was the first song she wrote to blow up. From here her career took off and she came out with her first album SOUR which of course was a hit. However recently she announced that she is coming out with a New album “Guts”. This is an undercurrent publication, so she is slowly releasing new songs.

From the time Olivia Rodrigo blew up from her fist album many of her fans wanted her to already publish another one. She is known to write about break-up songs and her fan base is a lot of teenagers so as you would guess many relate to her songs. Another one of her most famous songs is “Drivers License” which was actually about her ex, Joshua Baset. Due to the explosion the song created she from then was known to write about break-ups. Her first album “SOUR” was about a break-up and her new album “Guts” is about her getting over him.

Personally I think that both of these artists have positive and negative things they are known for but that aside, based on these albums I would have to say I prefer Olivia Rodrigo. This is because I see myself listening to her songs more and relating to them. Many pick their favorite artist based on how they relate to them which is why I have an interest in her songs, not to mention that her voice is incredible. Thus, I believe that Olivia Rodrigo has the better album.
