EDHS’s green club is all about recycling and making not only our campus cleaner, but ensuring the sustainability of the entire world. The club meets once a month excluding holiday events in rooms 308 or 358.
The current officers are: President; Skylar Welton-Doyal, vice president; Leah Gomez, secretary; Andrew Cox, treasurer; Janie Sperry, and publicist; Abigail Garcia. The Dig interviewed Welton-Doyal, a junior on campus and the current president of the EDHS Green Club to learn more about the club’s goals this year .
Welton-Doyal tells us that, “Our main goal is to get our members to walk away with meeting people. When I was a freshman I had a hard time with meeting a lot of people, especially with younger classmen. We [also want our] members to leave with more knowledge of how to be more sustainable in our day to day lives and in our community.”
They also have a goal of beautifying the campus by planting flowers and cleaning up trash. The club is very hands-on with their activities, such as recycling on campus.
The club plans to meet once a month in Mrs. Geel’s room (Meetings are currently in Mr. Helin’s room as Mrs. Geels is on maternity leave). They also have some fun things planned for the holiday season.
When asked if they are looking for new members, Welton-Doyal says that, “Of course! Everyone can join! I think a lot of people think that you have to be at the first meeting to join, but honestly you can really just show up, especially with friends. There’s always food or an activity and you are always welcome.”
To join, message them on Instagram @edhsgreen, email one of the officers or teachers (Helin and Geels), or just simply show up to the meetings.
With participation in Green Club, it not only looks good as a club in general, but it also gives you community service. Skylar mentions “every time you recycle it’s like one hour of community service which if you need that, I know a lot of students need it. And of course it always looks good to join clubs and do after school activities, but with ours it really contributes to our community which is what colleges really look at.”
Welton-Doyal adds, “recycling is Tuesdays and Thursdays during homeroom.
We hope that you consider joining our Green Club or even just support it, in order to not only make our campus, but also the world a better, healthier, and more sustainable place to live.
