This past Tuesday, October 3, El D’s Academic Decathlon students traveled to Fresno to hear Fresno State professors discuss and lecture on specialty topics for their upcoming competition in January.
Students can earn four units from CSUF for each year they participate, 10th-12th grade. They receive college credit by attending two lectures on the Academic Decathlon topic at the university campus and being on the team for the whole year. The university will give them a total of 12 social science and elective credits, the equivalent to four college classes for the three years they participate.
“It’s a great opportunity for students to receive a lot of four-year credit while at the same time preparing for the competition,” says Mr. Jolly, Academic Decathlon coach. He added, “All they have to do is attend the two lectures in addition to being on the team, so it’s really a win-win.”
This year’s topic is Technology and Humanity. The lecture/discussion this time was on the literature and art sections of the topic.
Sophomore Decathlete, Amy Beshay expressed, “It was so much fun. I love hanging out with my friends and meeting other students from all over the valley.”
The next lecture in the series will be in December.
