AcaDec Preps for Competition at Movie Theater in Madera

By Angela Cruz

This past Thursday, October 26, the Academic Decathlon team traveled to Madera Movies to participate in lectures on various academic subjects to prepare for this year’s competition.

After a rough start with the bus being late and thus missing half of their first lecture, El D decathletes arrived and filed in the various movie theaters with popcorn and drinks, but instead of watching movies, they listened to guest lecturers from Valley colleges and universities. The lecturers are all experts in their particular field. The subjects included: art, literature, music, social science, and a new addition to the lectures, math.

Senior Alex Dowdy commented, “The art lecture was my favorite! She was so knowledgeable and so nice.”

These lectures will help decathletes prepare for their subject tests when they compete in January. The theme this year is Technology and Humanity. Each subject connects to the theme and the lectures provide more insight and information on the topics.

Another decathlete added, “This trip was so much fun. Yes, it is educational, but it is also fun to hang out in a movie theater all day.”

Schools from all over Fresno County and the Central Valley attended these lectures.
