Miner Diamond Players Perform Comedy & Drama in EDHS’ 2023 Fall Play

By: Abby Carreon

This past month, EDHS Drama II and III had their fall play where Drama II performed A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Fifth Period and Drama III performed They Promised Her the Moon. The play was held in the El Diamante Theater on October 26 & 28 for a steal: $5. Both Drama II and Drama III executed the play very well and with the help of EDHS’ very own drama students, I was able to get some insight on how the play went and how they felt about it.

Starting off with Samantha Ferguson, who played actress three in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Fifth Period, she felt that “the play was funny and performing it was very fun to do.” She also mentioned that “some funny highlights for [her] were the part when the actors had to run across the stage at the end to get their prom tickets and when the math geeks swarmed Bugs, who was pretending to be a big celebrity”.

While Ferguson seemed to enjoy the experience of the performance, she revealed that getting things perfectly timed like “the school bell” was a bit of a challenge. Overall, she thought “all three performances were organized and everyone memorized their part of the play greatly.”

Mariana Garcia played actress two in, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Fifth Period. While speaking with Garcia, she shared that her experience in the play was much different than Ferguson’s. She says that the play gave her “so much second hand embarrassment” and that “rehearsing outside was a challenge because not everyone was focused all the time”. However, “[the character] Kristoff Bababalooch passing out the cards” was a highlight for her because “it was fun to guess what [she] and others would get”.

These two actresses allowed me behind the scenes of the play and with that I was able to understand that not everyone will have the same experience. For the most part, both Samantha and Mariana were able to have some highlights and good experiences during the play. I think the most important part is that they were able to carry through the performances, resulting in a memorable fall play for the 2023 school year!
