The El Diamante Drama Department has introduced the school to the play Badger. The production will take place at the Civic Theater on El D’s campus October 3rd, October 4th, and October 5th at 7:00 PM. Mrs. McAvoy, the Drama Teacher, shares that “The Drama Students had only seven weeks to memorize their parts and movements for the hour and a half show.”
The play is set in the 1940s during WWII, a time when most women worked in factory jobs because there were no men back home to do the so-called masculine jobs. This play focuses on the different stories of women as they navigate the difficulties of life, dealing with their husbands in the war while having a lot of responsibilities, and not being given the rights of men.
The play follows the lead role of Rose (payed by senior Aura Henry), a newlywed who has to work in a factory. Aura expresses that her biggest obstacle in rehearsing has to be “Memorizing lines, blocking: a term for the movement and positioning of actors on a stage, and the emotions you need to display when interacting with the other roles in the play.” When asked how do you overcome this, Aura responded that she rehearses over and over and really “drilling it in” is the best way she has found to memorize her parts and lines.
The El Diamante Drama Department is constantly working on ways to gain recognition and expand its audience. Aura expressed that anybody who can go should because it’s a great experience that opens us up to different experiences we might not have thought about. Support the Drama Department by coming to see “Badger” at the Civic Theatre on the El Diamante campus on October 3rd-5th at 7 PM!
