On Thursday, November 7th, 2019, Pixar released a teaser trailer for their upcoming summer animated feature release Soul. Soul is set to release in theaters on June 19th, 2020. The film is to explore themes of the passions and dreams within one’s soul. The main character, Joe Gardner, a middle school band teacher lives in New York City and has a passion to be a Jazz artist.

In the trailer, Joe celebrates getting a gig for a show as he’s walking down the sidewalk of New York. However, things take a curious turn when he falls down a sewer system as he walks down the street and enters a world in which he is a glowing blue and green ghost-like figure (symbolic of their inner souls). When Joe encounters 22, another soul-ghost like figure, his passion and dream ideologies are challenged as she does not have any desire for her life other than to do“a cowboy dance.” The film will most likely be a buddy film where the duo tries to find a way out of the mystical dark world in time for Joe’s gig while exploring the depth of Joe and 22’s souls.

Soul is being directed by Pete Docter who has been working for Pixar since the very beginning and is responsible for directing Monsters Inc., Up, and Inside Out. With the film’s incredible message and critically acclaimed director, it will most likely be a wide critical and box office success. However Soul is not the first Pixar film to release next year; on March 6th, 2020, Onward directed by Dan Scanlon, will release to theaters.
