Rob Shaver, a high school football coach for Plainedge High School in New York, was briefly suspended for outscoring their last opponent 61-13. This goes against the Nassau County limit for outscoring an opponent which can be no greater than a 42 point margin. Shaver’s suspension sparked debates over whether this was an incident of poor sportsmanship or actual bullying. When asked why he chose to keep his starters in and continue to score; he said he feared the other team would come back and win, so he chose not to take any risks. Sports psychologists argue that this form of punishment was excessive for different reasons. One is that these kinds of blowouts mostly tend to motivate teams for the next season and focus on what they need to work on. The other reason being is that this rule is enforced upon high school level football which isn’t meant to be taken as seriously as college or professional level football.
