This next Monday, school will not be in session due to the honoring of Martin Luther King Jr. and his contribution to the Civil Rights Movement. King was best known for his “I Have a Dream” speech that touched millions of people around the world in his goal to achieve racial equality through peace. In addition to this, he was also the youngest man to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1968, shortly after King died, a campaign was started for his birthday to become a holiday to honor him. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. Ways you can celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day is to read his work and show kindness amongst each other. King once said, “love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.” You can also choose to contribute acts of service to your community by volunteering at organizations nearby.
