Many restaurants are facing labor shortages and a high amount of employee turnover so they are offering incentives like tuition payments, four day work weeks, and bonuses. However, some employers, like the ones from Chipotle in Massachusetts, have had to cut corners to keep their store fully staffed. These Chipotle restaurants have violated the Massachusetts child labor laws with an estimated thirteen thousand violations from 2015 to 2019 resulting in a $1.4 million fine. The authorities have discovered that this chain frequently lets a plethora of 16 and 17-year-olds work more than nine hours a day and 48 hours per week. The chain was also under pressure to get more staff because of how low unemployment is, and trying to avoid understaffing. The attorney general’s office has stated that it was the biggest child labor case in the state’s history, Chipotle still hasn’t admitted to the thousands of violations.
