Concerns over vaccine prices and availability grow as COVID-19 spreads to the US

Health secretary, Alex Azar, spoke at a budget meeting last Wednesday, requesting another $136 million for research into a coronavirus vaccine. When questioned about the affordability of the vaccine, Azar refused to guarantee that it would be affordable for all Americans, saying that he could not “control the price” because they need the private sector to invest in order to develop it.

Nancy Pelosi hit back, saying that a vaccine developed with taxpayer dollars should be available to everyone and affordable, echoing concerns that a price tag on the vaccine would be devastating to low income and homeless members of the community.
